Cases of communal or religious rioting in 2020 nearly doubled from 2019 says NCRB – India Hindi News


According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the cases of communal or religious riots in the year 2020 had almost doubled as compared to 2019. This increase in riots has been seen when outdoor activities were very limited due to restrictions related to the Kovid-19 epidemic in the country.


The National Crime Records Bureau, which works under the Union Home Ministry, in its annual report said that 857 cases of communal and religious riots were registered in the country in 2020. According to the report, the number of such cases in 2019 was 438 in states and union territories while in 2018 the number of such cases was 512.

In the report, the NCRB said that during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, a complete lockdown was in force in the country from March 25, 2020 to May 31, 2020 and movement in public places was extremely limited during this period. In January and February last year, there were many demonstrations and riots in Northeast Delhi over the amended citizenship law in the country.


There were several protests and demonstrations over citizenship laws and communal riots in Northeast Delhi during January and February in 2020, while the outbreak of the pandemic began in March. According to the report, 736 cases of ‘caste conflict’ were registered in the year 2020, while 492 cases were found in 2019 and 656 in 2018. In this way, more cases were registered in the year 2020 than in the year 2018 and 2019.

The NCRB report said that a total of 71,107 cases of ‘crimes against public peace’ were registered across the country in 2020, up from 63,262 in 2019. The data showed that 2,188 cases of such offenses were registered under the ‘agriculture’ category, while 1,905 were registered for ‘rioting during a protest or demonstration’.
